026 ~ [Voice/Action] | Forward-dated to Sunday

[It's been two weeks since the incident with Arietta, and there was still no sign of Anise in the village. They never even had a chance to speak before she left for a mission, likely in an attempt to put some distance between herself and Ion after their argument. It's strange to think that the last time they went this long without speaking to each other by choice was around this same time last year, though for a very different reason. He's been so caught up in dealing with all of this that he actually let the anniversary of the day he first confessed his feelings for her pass by without a single thought!]

[It was strange to think so much time had already passed. He wasn't entirely sure how to feel about it really.]

[But sometime in the late afternoon, he opens his journal. There's no need to bother with a filter while Anise is still out of the village, and it isn't as though Arietta is the one he's trying to reason with here. Her anger is easier to understand and deal with. There's an uncharacteristic hint of exasperation in his voice when he speaks, having spent the last week and a half mulling over this without any obvious solution coming to mind.]

How do you stop two people who hate each other from continuing to hate each other? [Not a very eloquent way of asking, but it's the simplest way he can think of to explain the situation.]

Though this isn't the sort of problem I'm expecting an easy answer to, I was hoping someone might be able to offer some suggestions. Or perhaps if anyone's had any experience in dealing with a situation like this, it might be of some help.

[And regardless as to whether he's heard any solutions to this problem or not, he'll be spending the remainder of the evening in various places around town. He spends about an hour at the library, not quite able to concentrate on his reading. Giving that up, he goes for an aimless walk, lingering on the various bridges around town for a few minutes before moving on again. He probably looks more spaced out than he usually is, and the cold chill in the air probably isn't helping matters. By the time he arrives back home, it's been dark for awhile and he's shivering quite a bit. He probably should have worn his winter coat today.]

I've got some experience with it. Though it depends on how strong the hate is.

Why do they "hate" each other?

[Twirls a quill in between his fingers, thinking it over.]

There are several problems with that, eh. Sometimes there are things someone can never forgive. [Marco himself will never be able to forgive... a lot of people. He might not try to kill all of them if they were here, but his family would be hard-pressed to hold him back from trying. And indeed had to do just that sometimes.]

You were friends with both of them back home though?

As vague or specific as you're comfortable with, can you explain some of the situation with the conflict?

Like I said, some things are unforgivable, but others tend to be something more like a misunderstanding.

Other than their friendship with you, do they have any reason to try to work things out?

If not, then you're facing the toughest part. You could ask them both to act as your body guard and best friend, and as such, ask them to find a way to work with each other peaceably. However, that puts you in the position of risking your friendship with either, or even both of them, as either one might feel you're taking the other's side. It has the greatest risk, but possibly the greatest reward. If you trust them to both value their friendship with you that much, and to be reasonable enough to put that ahead of their enmity and jealousy with each other, then it could work. But like I said, it has a great risk.

I see.

Mah, I guess at this point then your best bet would be ask them both to find a way to work together for your sake, eh. At some point all three of you could wind up on a draft or mission together, and if Anise doesn't want to help protect you if Arietta is still at it, then just tell her you're both missing out on a chance for something good here.

Does Arietta still think you're the same boy you were supposed to be or something?

Are you dissatisfied with that, other than that she doesn't get along with your other friend?

Then perhaps your other friend, Anise, is equally frustrated. In a desire to protect you, it doesn't sound like she likes watching you be put into a position of having to be someone you are not, eh? Most friends would feel like that.

So now that Arietta is aware that you're a different person, she has less qualms about that, or does she still not like that Anise seemingly replaced her?

I certainly agree with you on that. Somethings are unforgivable, but I don't think this situation counts. Especially since ideally it should mean that they both want to protect you.

Ah.

I have... a few of my own old rivalries a little similar to that, I think. Not enough to want to kill the rival. [Otherwise you know, he'd just kill them. Or at least try. Unless he just wants to leave them alive to humiliate them... which he's been known to do.] But enough to find them incredibly irritating in a way that seems impossible to describe. My little brother though, he's very close to one such... rival. [One day Marco will find the right word to describe Shanks. One day...] On the one hand, that's even more annoying because it gives Shanks a reason to hang around, the damn bastard. [And maybe Marco gets a little jealous of the way Ace likes Shanks... maybe!] But on the other hand...

Shanks worked hard to help protect my brother and save my family. And for that, I can forgive a lot.

It's a little different though, because Shanks never hated me. [He rubs the back of his neck.] He picked a fight with my Pops though, but he worked with my old man to help protect my little brothers in the end. And the only reason he picked the fight in the first place... was because he wanted to protect the little brother of mine that he's close to. [And Shanks was an arrogant idiot who thought he understood a situation he didn't have the first clue about, and an enemy that the whole world couldn't afford to trust, much less face -- in Marco's opinion, that is. Ah well, it was all too late now, anyway.]

So I think it comes down to what Anise and Arietta consider more important: hating each other, or being your nakama.

And when it comes to protecting nakama... I know in my case even someone I hate enough to kill, I'll put it aside in order to protect the ones important to me. Even someone like Crocodile who tried to kill my nakama before. He just hated a mutual enemy of ours both even more than us, so we had a momentary truce in order to stop that mutual enemy.

If they need someone to hate, there's plenty to find around here. Between the Malnosso or Third Party. I guess it depends on their true ambitions.
