Ion, when you have a chance, there's another idea I'd like to bring up with you. Would you prefer that I come over to see you in person?

[It wouldn't be the first, in these past few months since Ion first informed her about his condition, but none of the possibilities thus far had proven to be very plausible. There were too many variables and factors to repeatedly take into consideration.]

[A reply comes almost immediately -- he doesn't have much else to do but browse the journal and read now that he's stuck in bed.]

Hello, Professor. If it's not too much trouble, I would appreciate it. I'd offer to meet halfway at the plaza, but I'm afraid my wheelchair is... broken right now.

[--into a million pieces, but you know, same difference.]

I don't mind the walk. [Though house 1 is pretty far. Maybe she'll bring Noishe along just so the way back isn't alone.] I'll be there as soon as I can, so please let someone in the house know I'm on my way.

[A nod.] All right. I'll make sure someone lets you in.

[And when they do, they'll probably direct her to his room as well. He's got the door open and Colonel the dog sitting at the end of his bed.]

Understood.

[It'll take about twenty minutes or so. Raine leaves Noishe to wander outside - the sky is overcast, but it hasn't rained, so he seems comfortable enough, before being directed up to Ion's room. The door may be open, but she'll knock on it anyway in case he isn't watching.]

Ion?

[Ion looks up from the book he'd been reading with a small smile. He seems to be in relatively good spirits today, though in-person it's much easier to see how much of a toll his illness is starting to take on him -- he looks far more pale than usual, and despite the fact that the room is fairly warm, he's dressed as if it were the middle of winter.]

Good afternoon, professor. Thank you for coming all this way... please, sit down. [He gestures to the chair at his desk for her to sit at.] You mentioned over the journal that you have another idea to share with me?

Very well. [She smiles in greeting, crossing the room to sit in the offered chair.] Yes, that's right. Most of the possibilities we've discussed have had issues with key factors, so I've decided to instead focus on a few ways to tackle them.

You mean like dealing with the seventh fonon?

[Which has probably been onethe biggest things impeding them in finding a safe way of healing him. The miasma is attached to the seventh fonons, and removing them altogether could make Ion's body unstable, killing him. Not to mention that even attempting to do so is would be dangerous for a seventh fonist to even attempt, as it would risk recreating what Ion did for Tear on Auldrant.]

What have you come up with?

Yes... we've already observed that the purifying spells don't go all the way to the root of the problem - the contaminated fonons. But... if an arte could be used to draw the fonons away from you, in their purest form ... if it's done efficiently, the contamination would be removed, and then they can be allowed to flow back to you.

I won't lie, Ion, it's... an incredibly dangerous idea.

[He takes a few moments to consider the idea. Pulling the fonons from his body was certainly possible, albeit risky.]

...in theory, it should be possible. But I'd worried about what could happen to the fonons while they're being separated. There's still a lot we don't know about the seventh fonon, even on Auldrant. If something were to go wrong, it could be dangerous for whoever casts the initial arte. Especially for a fonist...

[Notably, his mind isn't really too concerned with the danger posed to himself -- not right now, at least. While it's true he has no intention of giving up, he's still aware that if his condition persists as is, either way, he could die. At this point, it was worth the risk to try.]

We need to ensure that the fonons don't have another source to jump to while they're being drawn out with the arte. I wonder if there's a way to protect the caster... some form of magical barrier.

[He nods.] The problem with fonons is that they're naturally drawn to one another, and to perform an arte requires a fonist to gather fonons into their own body. If the contaminated fonons were pulled out of my body, any seventh fonist in the area could be at risk for becoming contaminated as well.

[Which is the last thing he wants to see happen.]

...but perhaps... if it wasn't a fonic arte protecting them, the fonons might not be able to register the castor as a source. Then the fonons would have no place to go.

We'd need to make sure that people who would be affected most adversely by those fonons are nowhere near the area.

And protection that isn't fonic arte related wouldn't be difficult to arrange. I'll have to try a few tests to be certain, but I'm sure I could work something out in that regard.

It might almost be better to try something like this away from the village altogether. Contamination aside, there's no telling what could happen if the seventh fonons went out of control. They could mutate, or even cause an explosion... and I don't want to see anyone get hurt for my sake.

Indeed. Either that, or perhaps a controlled environment, something that could be created in the battle dome... [She frowns. That could be dangerous in it's own way.

If only Gelda were still here. Surely she'd know more about how to proceed with this.] If only we had more of a way to test these theories before attempting them.

...do you think whatever protection you could create would be able to withstand the power of the seventh fonons even if they did go out of control? Fonic artes are weaker within the barrier, so I can't imagine they would be able to do anything too terrible, even if they did.

[Even if they can't test it, so far this sounds like one of the few ideas that actually accounts for all variables. The risk may not outweigh the potential benefits, in his case.]

I do have the unicorn horn, which can amplify my own abilities within the barrier. And it's possible that the protection itself doesn't have to be entirely related to healing magic. It just needs to repel any fonons that may try to escape the arte.

You're right. And as long as the castor is protected, the fonons shouldn't have any reason to stray away from one another either.

[And that way if the fonons did decide to go haywire and explode, the only person who would get hurt would be Ion -- there'd be little point in protecting him at that point, since without those fonons in his body, it would probably become unstable and break down anyway.]

...it's risky. But if it could work, it might be my only chance. As much as I don't want to admit it... I don't know how much longer my body can hold out for right now.

Yes... we don't want to delay too long. We just want to be more certain before we try anything too experimental. Working together, Mia and I can come up with a combination of spells that should hold out for the duration, at least.

That just leaves someone to cast the arte that will separate the contaminated fonons from the rest. Normally only a fonist would be capable of doing so, but given the risk of having one anywhere near the contaminated fonons... do you suppose there could be another method? I admit, I'm not very familiar with artes other than ones that use fonons.

[But in theory, if the principles are the same and they only differ in what source they draw power from, they shouldn't be all that different, right? It was hard to tell with how many similarities seemed to exist between such vastly different worlds.]

Hm... well, seventh fonons are connected to healing arts, aren't they? I've compared some of my magic to Professor Gelda's over the years, so an arte to draw them out could come from there.

[There also was the time Asch had asked her to help provide healing magic to give Luke a new body a few years ago...]

That's right, healing artes use the seventh fonon. I'm a seventh fonist as well, and while I should be able to help start the flow of fonons without much trouble, anything more would likely put my body under too much stress...

Your body would be under stress as it is. The point of this is to make you well again, after all - it wouldn't do us any good if you were pushed beyond your limits.

[They just needed an arte to contain the fonons... most of the other bases seemed covered. She might be able to put something together from Boltzman's book, or from Gelda's notes.]

But if you can find a way to remove the fonons, you should be able to use a similar method to contain them. That is to say, if it's possible for someone who isn't a fonist to harness them at all, there's no reason there should be any difference between controlling them and containing them. It's just a matter of finding an arte that would work for something like this...

Yes... and it's not something that we can readily test, unless we could create a simulation to try our theories on.
